Healthy tips to protect you from heat

With the present heat condition, it is important you protect yourself from heat-related illness. Some common illnesses experienced during heat include meningitis, rashes, dizziness, headache, nausea, and rapid heartbeat.

Experts say a heat-induced illness could cause a person to become confused or lose consciousness. It is important you guard against it.

Here are some health tips to help you

To avoid heat-related illnesses, wear light-weight clothing made of breathable material, like cotton. Wear as little clothing as possible when you are at home.

Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. It is important you carry your water bottle or stay close to your drinking water source. The water must also be clean, so you must avoid taking contaminated water.

Don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol, or large amounts of sugar. These, according to Doctors, could cause you to lose more body fluid. Also, avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.

If you must be outdoors, try to limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours. Avoid strenuous outdoor activities on hot days.

Take frequent breaks in cool places within your environment.

Avoid hot foods and heavy meals; they add heat to your body.

Air-conditioning is the best way to protect against heat-related illnesses. If you don’t have any in your home, spend time in air-conditioned locations such as public libraries or offices.

If you suspect heat exhaustion, move to a cooler location, apply cool wet cloths to your body, and drink cool water.

Heavy sweating removes salt and minerals from the body. These are necessary for your body and must be replaced.

Taking a cool shower or bath is a much better way to cool off.

Adjust to the environment. Be aware of any sudden change in temperature that will be stressful to your body. Limit your physical activity until you become accustomed to the heat.

Beware that heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke.
