Make your sneakers last longer with these care tips

A good pair of athletic shoes can be quite an investment, so you want them to last. Keep your favourite pairs in top shape with these care tips.

Protect them right out of the box

Invest in a good repellent spray to prevent dirt and water from damaging the surface of your sneakers. Apply the repellent immediately after unboxing the shoes. Taking this extra step keeps your sneakers clean and dry. Test for water resistance every one to two months by dripping a few beads of water on the outside, and re-spray as necessary.

Clean by hand regularly

Wash your athletic shoes by hand using a damp cloth, a toothbrush or shoe brush and a cleaner made especially for sneakers. Wipe away surface dirt with the cloth, and use the brush to remove stubborn stains. Choose brushes with bristles appropriate for the surface of the sneakers to clean without causing damage. Never put your athletic shoes in the washing machine or dryer as this adds a ton of wear-and-tear to the sneakers.

Soak the laces

Brighten up dingy laces with a quick soak in a bowl or sink. Mix sneaker cleaner or laundry detergent with some water, and swirl the laces around to saturate them.

Let them sit for a while before removing them from the soaking water, and use a toothbrush to remove any stubborn spots or stains. Rinse the laces thoroughly, and hang them up to dry. Avoid using bleach even on white laces because it can damage the fibres.

Fight insole odour

Sweat and heat can turn your beautiful sneakers into a stink factory. Combat the stench by wearing moisture-wicking socks and letting your sneakers dry completely between uses, especially if you work out in them. A natural deodorizing spray containing essential oils like peppermint and tea tree can also freshen up funky insoles without leaving chemical residues.
