Racism

By Bilkisu Muhammad

Racism can be described as an unfair treatment of people or violence against them because they do not have the same colour of skin. A racist is a person who believes people of his/her skin colour are better than those that have the opposite of his/her skin colour. Most people discriminate because of racism.

Racism is bad behaviour that people have indulged in for a long time. In the early 1800s, when the white people colonised the African countries, they treated them like animals and gave them unpleasant punishments. They made them slaves and made life uneasy for them.

Racism did not only happen in those days but is something that is still happening in some places. It does not only happen among countries of white-skinned people and countries of black-skinned people but also happens within a country. For example, in a school, a student can prefer some of his mates to others because of their skin colour.

Racism has some negative effects on people that are discriminated against such as:

1)      Losing confidence in themselves

2)      Staying away from public places

3)      Feeling lonely and unloved

4)      Feeling insecure and receiving unjust treatment

This wicked act of man’s inhumanity to man should be stopped
