Progress Educational Consult (PEC) has held an open-door friendly chess tournament.
The tournament was hosted by Roshallom Schools in Lagos.
The principal of Roshallom Schools, Akindele Ogundipe, while welcoming the participating schools, stated that the chess game helped to promote critical thinking from a tender age.
“The importance of chess cannot be overemphasised. It is better at this present age that we promote critical thinking. That is, you look at an issue from all perspectives and this will make you to become better leaders, to make quality decisions,” he said.
The facilitator, Tolu Ogunwobi, described chess as a very old game that existed even before Jesus Christ came to the world.
Ogunwobi said, “Chess is a professional sport. However, it is not only the professional aspect of chess that should make you play chess. Chess is fun and it builds your intellect.
Chess is also a competitive game that will allow you to travel to different parts of the world. Even if you don’t have the resources to travel the whole world, you can play it on the internet against any player in the world.”
The schools that participated included Roshallom schools, Watered Garden schools, Brighter Horicon schools and Beginners Field schools.
In the fastest finger category, Esther Otaru of Brighter Horizon School emerged first, while, Orisunayomi Thomas of Rashallom International School emerged second, and Chizoba Victory of Beginners Field school third.
