Energy is the ability or capacity to do work. There are basically two sources of energy; natural and artificial sources. Natural sources of energy include the sun, water, wind, wood, coal, and natural gas. Artificial sources are man-made, which include petroleum products such as petrol, kerosene, diesel, and so on.

Energy can exist in various forms such as electrical energy, heat energy, solar energy, light energy, chemical energy, mechanical energy and nuclear energy. Energy can be converted from one form to another through devices like electric generators, electric motor, telephone, water heater, and others. It plays a key role in the everyday activities of man.

Nigeria’s energy mix is primarily dominated by fossil fuels, with a focus on crude oil (petroleum) and natural gas. Nigeria is the largest oil producer in Africa, with oil accounting for approximately 90 per cent of the country’s export earnings. Since energy derived from petroleum products is non-renewable, there is a need for Nigeria to diversify its energy mix.

Different energy sources can shape our future as a nation in various ways. For instance, an increase in renewable energy sources like sun, water and wind can reduce dependence on fossil fuels, mitigate climate change impacts, create jobs, improve local economies, enhance energy access and affordability, among other benefits.

Besides dependence on fossil fuels, challenges faced by Nigeria’s energy sector include inadequate infrastructures, energy shortages, environmental concerns, corruption and mismanagement, among others.

The Nigerian government needs to do more in order to tackle these challenges and transition towards a more sustainable energy mix.

In conclusion, Nigeria can leverage its energy resources to drive growth, development, and sustainability, while minimizing environmental impacts and ensuring energy security for future generations.
